Subs!, the magazine for kids who love YouTube, was declared the winner of this year’s Dragons’ Den @CBJ, the Centre for Broadcasting and Journalism.

Four top-notch mag pitches by MA Magazine Journalism students lined up for the annual contest to unearth a killer editorial idea that will take the publishing world by storm.

Judges Diane Kenwood of TimeInc, Mike Shallcross, associate editor at Mark Allen Group, and Slimming World magazine publisher Elise Wells had high praise for all four concepts (below).

They chose Subs! as the winner for its clear focus on a target audience, imaginative content ideas and keen business planning.

The first edition of Subs!, produced by all of the students on the MA course, will be published online at the end of March 2018.

Meanwhile, read here the details of all four contenders:

Subs! – targeting the popular children’s market, a magazine for young YouTube fans, 8-12, featuring all their top YouTube favourites plus, games, quizzes and puzzles

Genever – devoted to all things gin-tastic, this mag features everything for the discerning gin-drinker from boutique distilleries to gin-themed nights out. Guess who their ideal guest editor would be?*

Boomerang – another one for kids, this time with an eye on their parents too, this educational mag is all about teaching children key topics like the environment in fun fashion.

City Cycle – targeting the urban bike and commuter crowd, this aims to give fans of the two-wheeler who are city-based a fresh look at how to make the most of their enthusiasm for bikes within easy reach of home.

The four contenders will be judged this Wednesday by an industry panel this year made up of Diane Kenwood of TimeInc, Mike Shallcross, associate publisher with Mark Allen Group, and Elise Wells, editor-in-chief and publisher of Slimming World magazine.

Find out who has won here from Wednesday and next month we’ll be producing the first issue of whichever mag has triumphed.
