We are a group of journalism Master’s students at Nottingham Trent University who set out to make a magazine about, well, magazines. We wanted to make a magazine by journalists, for journalists, offering industry insights, knowledge and and also a bit of lighthearted fun.
Halfway through our project everything kicked off with the global pandemic and so our university moved immediately into online teaching.
This put the fate of our magazine up in the air. However, we aren’t a group to back down from a challenge and we decided to follow the lead of several magazines that have been produced remotely over the past couple of weeks.
We started with the bare bones we’d made in class and working from our homes, our sheds and even from whole other countries, we have managed to come together and create the online and very first issue of Magazine² – now live on the Issuu platform.
Our magazine pages are full to bursting with all our wonderful content – an interview with Mollie Makes editor Yvette Streeter, tips from counsellor Dr Phil Parker on how journalists can deal with burnout and an opinion piece on the unfair nature of unpaid internships.
There are also tips and tricks for kickstarting a journalism career from top journos at the likes of Sunday Times Style, The Stage, Little White Lies, FourFourTwo and . . . Total Carp mag.
Online over the next few days, there will be more insights into the world of journalism with Q&As with 14 different industry professionals, information on where to find the best journo jobs and training courses and even a podcast where we sit down with special guest The Voice sports editor Rodney Hinds.
Wherever you are in your career, we have something for you. Whether we inspire you, teach you or even just entertain you we hope you enjoy our magazine and our content, and that it brings you some joy in these uncertain times.
Let’s get to work!
