Notice anything unusual about this picture?

Sometimes it’s easy to forget to look up as you hurry along the pavement at night, grateful for the streetlamps lighting the way. Do that in Nottingham’s Park Estate and you may be amazed by what you see.

Unlike the surrounding city centre streets, the leafy avenues and terraces of The Park are lit by a network of lamps installed when the estate was constructed in the 1800s – to this day powered by gas.

A committee of Park residents saved the network from falling into disrepair in the 1980s with the help of a chance visitor from Cumbria. Today, the system is carefully maintained by the current lamp lighter Andrew Ryalls from the Park Estate team.

Local and Community History Month is a great excuse to notice the history around us every day. Just remember to look up.
