When Instagram went down last night (May 21) people flocked to their other social media platforms like Twitter and TikTok to find out what was wrong.

Alternative platforms were filled with hashtags, #myinstagram #y’allinstagram. Users were panicking unsure if it was just a glitch on their device, an issue with certain network providers, or an issue with the app itself.

Down Detector, a tracking website that reports outages, showed more than 1,80,000 reports worldwide and 52,127 reports in the UK alone.

92% of issues were with the app itself, 6% with the Instagram website, and another 2% had login issues.

Instagram was down for about 2 hours, from 11pm to around 1:19am BST. Major reports of the outage came in from the US, Canada, and Australia as well as the UK.

With more than 100K searches on Google, it seems to have had a major impact on everyone’s daily dose of social media consumption.

“Earlier today, a technical issue caused some people to have trouble accessing Instagram. We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we are sorry for any disruption this has caused,” a spokesperson for Meta told Variety

Unable to use Instagram users took to Twitter and other social media platforms to share their experience with the shutdown. Many made references and memes about the fear of missing out (FOMO) from scrolling on the app.
